First Keystone Announces Third Quarter 2021 Earnings (Unaudited)

First Keystone Corporation (OTC Pink: FKYS), parent company of First Keystone Community Bank, reported net income for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2021, of $4,023,000 and $11,506,000, respectively. Net income per share was $0.68 and $1.95 while dividends totaled $0.28 and $0.83 per share, respectively, for the three and nine months ended September 30, 2021. Net income for the nine months ended September 30, 2021 increased by $2,935,000 or 34.2% as compared to the same period in 2020. The increase was primarily due to increases in net interest income, mainly due to an increase in interest and fees on loans, increased income on securities and a decline in interest paid on deposits.

Total interest income increased by $1,999,000 or 6.8% as compared to the nine months ended September 30, 2020. The increase was chiefly due to a $1,144,000 increase in interest earned on Commercial Real Estate loans and a $860,000 increase in SBA fees. Total interest expense decreased by $1,260,000 or 24.5% primarily due to a $1,670,000 decrease in interest paid on deposits due to decreased interest rates in the latter part of 2020.

Non-interest income, excluding net securities gains, increased by $841,000 or 19.0% for the nine months ended September 30, 2021 as compared to the same period in 2020. Trust Department income increased $84,000 for the nine months ended September 30, 2021 due to new account openings and higher fees earned on certain types of accounts due to increased market values. Net securities gains for the nine months ended September 30, 2021 of $165,000 were realized due to gains on market value fluctuations on marketable equity securities held in the Corporation’s portfolio. Other income increased $655,000 for the nine months ended September 30, 2021. The largest contributors to the increase in other income included a $275,000 increase in ATM and debit card income due to increased transaction volume and a $330,000 increase in gains on sales of mortgage loans mainly due to a higher volume of loans sold.

Non-interest expense increased during the nine months ended September 30, 2021 to $19,011,000. The $1,185,000, or 6.7%, increase from the same period in 2020 was the result of a $332,000 increase in salaries and employee benefits, mainly due to an increase in employee profit sharing, training and salaries expense. Pennsylvania shares tax increased $255,000 due to an increase in total Bank equity. There was also a $216,000 increase in FDIC insurance expense due to small bank assessment credits being fully utilized in the prior year, coupled with growth in assets. The increases in non-interest expense were offset by decreases in occupancy expense and expenses associated with foreclosed assets held for resale in the combined amount of $147,000.

Income tax expense increased $684,000 during the nine months ended September 30, 2021, as compared to the same period in 2020, due to higher overall operating income. The Corporation recognized $303,000 of tax credits from low-income housing partnerships in the first nine months of 2021 and 2020.

Total assets increased to $1,389,939,000 at September 30, 2021, an increase of $255,204,000 or 22.5% as compared to September 30, 2020, due to an increase in debt securities and growth in net loans. Cash and cash equivalents increased $86,072,000 as of September 30, 2021, due to increased deposits.

Securities and restricted stocks increased $116,782,000 or 36.5% and net loans increased $52,036,000 or 7.5%. Deposits increased $226,285,000 or 24.6% at September 30, 2021, as compared to September 30, 2020, mainly due to stimulus programs. Stockholders’ equity increased $7,319,000 or 5.2% principally due to an increase in retained earnings.
