State of emergency lifted, but survey reveals most say Tokyo Olympics should have been canceled.

Tokyo survey

A global survey by the world’s largest Freelancing and online jobs marketplace, Freelancer.com, has revealed many fear the Olympics will be a covid-19 super-spreader event and “should have been cancelled”.

Sydney, New South Wales Jun 23, 2021 (Issuewire.com) - Just weeks out from the opening ceremony of the postponed 2020 summer games, 63% of respondents to the 5th Global Coronavirus survey agreed the event should not have been allowed to go ahead.

Tellingly, 56% said even if they had the time and were offered an all-expenses-paid trip they would still not attend.

Japan is still dealing with the 4th wave of infections, and although infections have fallen from a peak of 7000 a day in mid-May the 7-day average is still 1,500 for the country overall, 118 for Osaka and 385 for Tokyo. The country has suffered more than 775,000 Covid-19 infections resulting in over 4,000 deaths.

A state of emergency that was declared in late April across 4 prefectures, including Tokyo, was expanded to 10 prefectures and extended to June 20.

The Olympics are expected to bring 70,000 visitors into the country. The IOC says 80% of athletes attending the games will be vaccinated and delegates will be tested before and after arrival. Just 15% of Japanese residents have received at least one covid-19 vaccination.

The Freelancer survey was conducted in late May, early June 2021 in a campaign email to all 52 million registered users. This was the 5th time Freelancer had surveyed its users since the pandemic began in March 2020. The full results can be viewed here.

The antipathy to the Tokyo games is at its highest level since surveying began.

Respondents also expressed similar reservations about attending the Beijing Winter Olympics and the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
