Fed Chair Powell says interest rates are ‘likely to be higher’ than previously expected

The Fed may need to raise interest rates more than previously expected amid signs that inflationary pressures in the economy remain abnormally strong.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell stressed on Tuesday that central bank policymakers are prepared to raise interest rates higher than previously expected and pick up the pace of increases in the face of hotter-than-expected economic data.

"The latest economic data have come in stronger than expected, which suggests that the ultimate level of interest rates is likely to be higher than previously anticipated," Powell said in the remarks prepared for delivery before the Senate Banking Committee. "If the totality of the data were to indicate that faster tightening is warranted, we would be prepared to increase the pace of rate hikes."

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
