Nationally renowned band, Tierra continues its fight for inheritance rights.

Tierra, a groundbreaking Chicano band, was established in 1972 by Rudy and Steve Salas. They rose to national prominence in 1981 with their hit song "Together," which peaked at #14 on Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 chart. Tragically, Rudy and Steve both succumbed to COVID in 2020 and 2022, respectively. In the aftermath of their passing, the Salas family has been embroiled in a legal battle for their inheritance rights.

Since the founders' deaths, the ownership of Tierra, the Tierra band, and its intellectual property rights have become the subject of litigation in the Los Angeles Superior Court (Case No. 21 STCV 25207). The lawsuit was initiated by the Salas family against Joanna Salas, Rudy's second wife at the time of his demise. The complaint, consisting of ten key points, includes allegations of declaratory relief, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, intentional interference with contractual relations, false advertising, defamation, and more.

On a Facebook post dated March 20, 2023, Rudy's daughter lamented, “when my father Rudy Salas passed away in 2020, he unfortunately did not leave behind a will or trust. After initial plans to share the band’s trademark that he co-owned with his brother, my stepmother Joanna suddenly claimed that she was the sole owner”. On June 2nd the Salas family made an announcement to promoters, buyers and agents that the United States Patent and Trademark Office had actually taken steps to remove Joanna Salas after an appeal submitted by the lawyer representing the Salas family. Tierra continues under the banner of "Tierra Legacy" for now and plans to release new music in the early part of 2024. Tierra Legacy tours nationally, and is exclusively owned by the Salas family and is not entangled in any ongoing legal disputes.
