“At Ryder, we take pride in employing members of the veteran community, which is rich with disciplined, quality professionals whose skill sets match well with many roles in our company,” says Robert Sanchez, chairman and CEO for Ryder. “Our veterans possess distinct skills learned through military service. Their inherent integrity and ability to follow through on commitments are characteristics that are vital to delivering on our promises to customers. It’s a true honor to be recognized by Forbes, but more than anything, we are humbled by and proud of the veterans who work at Ryder. I’d like to thank and salute all our veterans for their service, sacrifice, and dedication; we are forever indebted to you.”

Forbes and Statista selected the America’s Best Employers for Veterans 2021 based on an independent survey completed by over 5,000 veterans working for companies employing at least 1,000 people within the United States. Participants were asked to give their opinion on a series of statements related to general topics regarding their own employer, for example: atmosphere and development, image, working conditions, salary and wage, workplace, diversity, and a set of topics related specifically to the interests of veterans in the workplace.

Veteran Hiring Initiatives at Ryder

Ryder has long been committed to recruiting military veterans as the company has hired more than 11,000 veteran employees in the United States since joining the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring our Heroes program in November 2011.

In 2015, Ryder launched its Veteran Buddy Program that pairs Ryder employees who are military veterans with new veteran employees. The program is designed to help ease the transition from military to civilian life, which can be a major challenge for recently separated veterans returning to the workforce.

In 2016, Ryder launched the Ryder Diesel Technician Career Skills Program in partnership with the U.S. Army. The program trains current active duty military members for placement into a Ryder technician position after military service at one of Ryder’s nearly 800 maintenance locations.

In 2017, the company was selected for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes Lee Anderson Veteran and Military Spouse Employment Award for overall excellence in hiring and retaining veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses.

In 2018, Ryder partnered with The CDL School’s “Troops to Transportation” to offer driver training position to separating military members.

Earlier in 2021, Ryder received the Above and Beyond Award on behalf of the men and women of the National Guard and Reserve Forces for outstanding service and continuing support to the nation’s defense. The Above and Beyond Award is presented by Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) State Committees to recognize employers at the local level who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act by providing their Guard and Reserve employees additional, non-mandated benefits such as differential or full pay to offset lost wages, extended health benefits, and other similar benefits.
