The Milken Institute Future of Health Summit Opens November 6 in Washington, DC

The three-day event convenes 200+ speakers to confront the most pressing issues affecting medical research, preventative care, and public health.

Opening today, the 2023 Milken Institute Future of Health Summit gathers hundreds of speakers and attendees who are inspired to share ideas and advance work around this year’s theme: “Closing the Gap: Better Health for More People.”

The three-day Future of Health Summit, which runs November 6-8 at the Salamander in Washington, DC, brings together leaders to collaborate and connect during sessions that dive into a variety of topics, including biomedical research, patient engagement, health equity, chronic disease, food access and sustainability, mental health, aging and longevity, health policy, and more.

“Innovation in technology is helping to transform healthcare, but we still have more work to do as important factors such as advances in health equity and the impact of climate change on health determinants are often overlooked,” said Richard Ditizio, CEO of the Milken Institute. “We were intentional about convening a diverse group of leaders who can confront the most significant health challenges before us and also bring different points of view to ensure that the realities of our fellow citizens are woven into creating solutions to the problems we collectively face.”

During the summit, the Milken Institute will launch the Aging Innovation Collaborative to elevate the need to prepare for an aging US population. The new collaborative, led by the Milken Institute Future of Aging through a significant contribution from the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC), will focus on the tech-enabled convergences of housing, health care, and community. Its offerings will include action-oriented research, an invite-only Aging Innovation Council, and a suite of advisory services to impact and improve the lives of older adults.

In addition to discussing the current needs and future trends in health, attendees will build stakeholder relationships, foster innovative solutions, and turn ideas into actionable policy toward closing gaps.

“We have seen incredible breakthroughs in science, technology, and medicine but persistent gaps remain between innovation, access, and equity,” said Esther Krofah, EVP of MI Health. “This summit is an opportunity to confront these challenges and gain momentum for the bold ideas that will transform health for people across settings, geography, diverse backgrounds, and various life stages.”

Summit panels include the following: AI’s Moment in Health; Can Cell and Gene Therapies be Made Cheaper; Climate Change and Health: Creating Healthy, Sustainable Communities; Innovation and Investment in Women’s Reproductive Health; Revolutionizing Mental Health Care Through Innovation; Advancing Whole-Person Health: Breaking Down Silos in Chronic Disease Prevention; Federal Brain Boost: Advancements and Next Steps in Dementia Care; Food Policy: From Farm Bill to Health Care; Balancing Innovation and Access; and much more.

More than 200 leaders in government, philanthropy, healthcare, academia, research, patient advocacy, the investment community, and more will lend their expertise and insights, including Amy Abernethy, President, Product Development and Chief Medical Officer, Verily; Alex Azar, 24th Secretary, US Department of Health and Human Services; Xavier Becerra, Secretary, US Department of Health and Human Services; Deborah Brooks, CEO and Co-Founder, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research; Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, Administrator, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; Robert Califf, Commissioner, US Food and Drug Administration; Jesse Ehrenfeld, President, American Medical Association; Atul Gawande, Assistant Administrator for Global Health, USAID; Vin Gupta, Chief Medical Officer, Amazon Pharmacy; John Nkengasong, Ambassador at Large, US Global AIDS Coordinator, US Department of State; Renee Wegrzyn, Director, Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H); Angela Williams, President and CEO, United Way Worldwide; and Members of Congress including, Michael Bennet, US Senator, Colorado; Bill Cassidy, US Senator, Louisiana; Amy Klobuchar, US Senator, Minnesota; Roger Marshall, US Senator, Kansas; Todd Young, US Senator, Indiana.
