The Pershing Square Foundation Announces $2M in Grants to Newark Organizations to Support Local Community

The Pershing Square Foundation today announced $2M in grants to a group of twelve Newark organizations. The Pershing Square Foundation selected organizations that provide critical services to the community.

The Pershing Square Foundation selected the following organizations for grants:

Community Health Law Project provides legal and advocacy services, training, education, and related activities to persons with disabilities and chronic health conditions, with an emphasis on those most vulnerable and needy.

Cooperman College Scholars provides resources to highly-motivated, academically talented, under-represented students in college including up to $40,000 in scholarship aid, a laptop, textbook credits, and general support.

Greater Newark Conservancy is dedicated to improving the environment and quality of life in Newark and the surrounding areas through environmental education, community gardening, and urban agriculture.

I Have a Dream Foundation partners with schools and Dreamers to provide long-term support to students and families to increase access to college and improve generational opportunity.

KIPP New Jersey has 19 schools across Newark and Camden (14 in Newark) serving 7,900+ students who graduate at 3x the national rate.

La Casa de Don Pedro serves over 50,000 people in Newark through services that focus on improving housing, social support networks, economic stability, eating habits, education, and access to health care.

Melinated Moms is a community-centered social enterprise supporting moms and women to become better versions of themselves through advocacy, education, awareness, and entrepreneurship.

My Son is Me provides mentoring to boys in Newark ages 8-13 by engaging parents and guardians.

Newark Arts Council is an anchor cultural institution that supports the art of artists who are part of Newark’s community through grant programs. It provides arts education for PreK-12 children in Newark.

Newark Community Street Team was founded by Aqueela Sherrills who brokered a peace agreement between gangs in Los Angeles. Sherrills was invited to do similar work in Newark using an evidence-based approach to violence reduction.

Newark Science and Sustainability is an organization that has turned three abandoned lots into community gardens and advocates for healthy food access and local production.

Willing Hearts Community Center is dedicated to the Newark community and brings together volunteers to provide services including food, clothing, counseling, and family support.
