Dentist Releases Memoir Recalling Vietnam Service

Charleston, SC, Oct. 25, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Lifelong dentist and Vietnam veteran, Robert L. Engelmeier, releases a unique military memoir this year. Offering readers a fresh perspective on how the Vietnam conflict unfolded, Rockets, Sand, and Amalgam explores what war is like from the “rear” of military service.

During times of conflict, ideally, every 7 soldiers stationed on the “front lines” have 10 support personnel in the “rear.” Dental pain and infections can diminish a soldier’s ability to fight as an effective soldier, so the military employs dentists among its service members to handle dental emergencies and perform routine dental check-ups. Fresh out of dental school, author Robert L. Engelmeier was assigned to 483rd USAF Hospital at Cam Ranh Bay. Upon arrival in Vietnam, Engelmeier believed he had a competent understanding of his duty as a general dentist but felt that his training in war and conflict was severely lacking. Rockets, Sand, and Amalgam explores stories and incidents that happened close to the military action both in and beyond the dental chair. Throughout his memoir, Engelmeier pays incredible tribute to the brave American troops, his own dental patients, as they fought in Vietnam.

Rockets, Sand, and Amalgam will appeal to military veterans, dental professionals, and anyone who might be interested in learning about the lives of service personnel during Vietnam. This memoir showcases a fresh perspective that allows readers to feel immersed in an important time period.

Rockets, Sand, and Amalgam is available for purchase online at Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com.
