Plastic Surgeon Dr. Scott Mimms Faces Multiple Medical Malpractice Charges in Indiana

Taborlaw News panorama 1

Indianapolis, Indiana – Mimms has been accused of performing botched cosmetic and bariatric surgeries at Advanced Surgery of Indiana, his Indianapolis medical practice. His liposuction patients allegedly developed complications such as infections and sepsis. The surgical center provides liposuction, neck lifts, facelifts, breast augmentation, body contouring, and cosmetic injections, among other procedures.

The Indiana Attorney General is investigating Mimms for unsafe surgical practices that include performing surgery in an office that has not been certified for outpatient surgical procedures and failing to use proper anesthesia techniques. Instead of having a qualified anesthesiologist present for surgeries, Mimms allegedly administered anesthesia to patients himself while simultaneously doing surgery.

“Patients trust their medical providers to act in the best interests of their health. Botched surgeries and other negligent medical treatment jeopardize patient safety,” said Michael Holland, a personal injury attorney and partner at Tabor Law Firm, an Indianapolis law firm that handles medical malpractice cases. “Patients who have suffered harm because of a medical mistake should reach out to an experienced medical malpractice lawyer right away. They may be entitled to compensation through a personal injury claim.”

Mimms has a history of medical negligence. According to a CBS4/FOX59 investigation, the surgeon has at least 18 medical malpractice claims on file. The Indiana Medical Licensing Board held a hearing that amounted to an emergency review on January 26 after receiving a petition that described Mimms as a “clear and immediate danger” to the public. His original medical license suspension of 90 days was extended for the same duration on March 23.

The suspension petition detailed the case of a patient known as “HP.” In November, Mimms performed liposuction on the patient, who experienced pain and vomiting four days later. The Community North Hospital found that HP had a punctured bowel. The patient eventually died after suffering from septic shock.
