On UN International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Community Groups Urge Collaboration and Partnership

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World held a special presentation offering positive suggestions to safeguard communities.

In honor of the UN International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World and the DC Prevention Center for Wards 7 and 8 of the city of Washington, DC, addressed outreach efforts to help with the drug abuse issues in the nation’s capital.

The speakers covered the importance of working together and educating community members to enable individuals to make more informed decisions about whether to take drugs. The keynote speaker, a fourth generation native Washingtonian, Dr. Nura Green Lane has more than 30 years of experience supporting community-based prevention initiatives. Significantly, on her way to speak at the International Day Against Drug Abuse event, Dr. Green stopped to help someone on the street who appeared to need treatment with Narcan, a nasal spray that can be administered to prevent opioid overdose deaths. Dr. Lane teaches others how to use Narcan, and speaks from experience, as she has personally administered it numerous times in emergency situations.

Dr. Lane spoke about drug prevention, including “risk and protective factors” such as whether one’s parents use drugs in the home and whether schools and community leaders provide support for those choosing to stay away from drugs.

A Metropolitan Police Officer also spoke, acknowledging the help of community partners, such as Foundation for a Drug-Free World, in community education efforts. The officer said, “Anytime I need Drug-Free World, they are there to help.”

Thalia Ghiglia, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World DC’s faith liaison, showed a video from a teacher who has used the Drug-Free World’s Truth About Drugs materials in her middle school for the last five years and testified about the appreciation and understanding that her students have for the material. The students are moved by the true stories from former drug users and dealers that tell the truth at a level the students can relate to. The first-hand accounts in The Truth About Drugs documentary remove any glamor connected with drug use.

One event attendee, whose participation in a local community organization had lead him to call 911 to help people who may have overdosed in the street, was thankful for the information and looked forward to further training from the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department on how to handle such problems.

On behalf of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, Thalia Ghiglia praised the community partnership in this event. She said, “We really appreciate our partners and would not be able to do the work we do without them. Together we can make our communities better for all of us.”
