Laura Temin’s New Educational Drive Aims To Prevent Accidental Hypnosis

Roswell/Atlanta Georgia-based licensed counselor and hypnotherapist Laura Temin helps communities build awareness of problems caused by Accidental Hypnosis, teaching people how to recognize the state, protect themselves, and use the state of hypnosis for their benefit- in a new public awareness drive.

Following her 2022 book “Accidental Hypnosis: Exposing the Hidden Influences that Control Your Mind and Your Life”, Laura Temin continues to raise awareness of the importance of recognizing the difference between intentional hypnosis for self-improvement, and Accidental Hypnosis which easily creates problems such as anxiety, depression, excess weight, relationship distress and limiting beliefs. Now featured in an April 2024 TEDx talk, her fresh perspective empowers individuals to be aware of the powerful combination of external suggestions, internal chatter, and “Accidental Hypnosis” - and take practical steps to block the negative effects and instead, leverage the state of hypnosis to improve their lives.

The TEDx Talk is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4RdqxJH940

Laura challenges the common assumption that hypnosis only happens under the guidance of a hypnotherapist or for entertainment as in stage hypnosis- and instead, she pioneers the concept of “Accidental Hypnosis”.

Unlike therapeutic hypnosis, which helps people break bad habits and reach goals; or stage hypnosis, for entertainment purposes, Accidental Hypnosis has the potential to negatively impact a person without their awareness and puts people at risk. It occurs whenever the mind slips into an intermediate state between being fully awake and falling asleep, or when a person is stressed, or sleepy, she explains. Both positive and negative experiences can lead to this light trance state - from being relaxed or zoning out, as well as when a person is overwhelmed, stressed, or during a trauma. But the state is even more powerful when a person is stressed, emotional, or just overloaded by life.

Regardless of how it occurs, Accidental Hypnosis brings with it the same increase of susceptibility to suggestion that intentional hypnosis does - and that’s where problems may arise.

“Problems occur when we don’t realize that we’re in that easily influenced state, and we’re not monitoring what we let into in our minds, what we tell ourselves, and what we immerse ourselves in,” says Laura in her recent TEDx talk. Since hypnosis is a natural state that people move in and out of every day, multiple times a day, occurring as a person wakes and as the mind tires and winds down before bedtime, it often coincides with exposure to stimuli via social media, television, emails, the news, and upsets reviewed in the mind - and many of those stimuli tend to be negative. And because people scroll on their phones and watch tv at the end of the day or when their mind is tired and needs a rest, advertisements and bad news can strongly impact a person.

Being aware that hypnosis is a natural state- often experienced as 'zoning out' or 'vegging out' is of primary importance. Because in that light state of hypnosis, the mind is vulnerable to intentional and unintentional suggestions - meaning that if a person is unaware that they are in that state of influence, what is heard or said that is undermining, can accidentally create problems or strengthen already existing problems, particularly when a person emotionally revisits those upsets while in that light, accidental state of hypnosis. Understanding this concept is the first step towards preventing those negative stimuli from having a deeper influence on the individual. And because so few people understand or recognize Accidental Hypnosis, problems caused in that state become chronic and often don't resolve despite multiple attempts to address the problem. It usually requires intervention from someone trained in treating problems that occur in Accidental Hypnosis.

To avoid problems caused by Accidental Hypnosis, Laura suggests first, that people become aware of the state and then, that people block the state. Once that's done, it's important to make use of the state in a positive way. This can be done through uplifting morning and evening rituals to focus on goals and block oneself from self-destructive influences when in such a vulnerable state.

The main idea is to fill the mind with uplifting thoughts and desired outcomes instead of problems during the times when the mind is easiest to influence. This alone can help individuals reduce the risk of unnecessary exposure to problems that result from this state.

For individuals interested in breaking the spell of Accidental Hypnosis or resolving problems previously created through Accidental Hypnosis, Laura Temin currently offers many solutions, including a 15-minute consult, webinars, and specialized programs to Break the Spell of Accidental Hypnosis.
