author Sue Seserman, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.
The electrifying Epilectra series follows the remarkable journey of Eden Rivers, a 5th grade New York City social studies teacher, whose life takes a shocking turn when she's struck by lightning at a family dinner and develops epilepsy as a result. Eden's new disability soon reveals itself to be accompanied by a remarkable "superability." So, as Eden grapples with her new reality, she also becomes the city's newest superhero: Epilectra.
Eden/Epilectra, her younger brother, Logan, and their friend Angel Estoban, form a team for superheroes who, like Epilectra, have disabilities they transform into superabilities. They call it Team SEEZ, for Support & Empower Everyone Zealously. By the end of Epilectra Book 1 and 2, Team SEEZ members include Epilectra with epilepsy, Logan with paralysis, Insulator with type 1 diabetes, Aupticus with autism, C.P. with cerebral palsy, and Endo-Girl with endometriosis.
"The Epilectra series mission is twofold: Disability Empowerment and Stigma Elimination," stated Creator and Author, Sue Seserman. "CDC stats tell us 1 in 4 of us will be diagnosed with a disability in our lifetime. I wrote Epilectra so all these people with disabilities - especially youth - would see themselves as superheroes, too" Seserman has two invisible disabilities, epilepsy and type 1 diabetes, and was motivated to create Epilectra by the time she spent volunteering with hospitalized epilepsy patients."
"The patients I visited with, talked with me about giving up so much because of their disabilities," explained Seserman. "They'd given up on their education, their careers, their relationships, and their independence. I wanted to do something to change their mindset from one of 'I can't' to one of 'I can'."
Epilectra Book 1 is packed with three exciting adventures - Story 1: SEEZation, Epilectra's origin story and the formation of Team SEEZ; Story 2: Up on the Roof, an exploration of Eden's relationship with family and students that culminates with troublemaker Henry taking Epilectra's story nationwide; and Story 3: River Rager, a tale that spans from bottom of the Hudson River to the top of the Empire State Building and chronicles Epilectra's effort to keep half man/half shark, River Rager, from turning the city into his personal underwater playground.
