National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and Mitigating Exposure Risks to Lead in Homes, Schools, and Businesses

By: WebWire

National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). For 2021, this annual event takes place from October 24th through the 30th.

According to HUD:

About 3.3 million American households, including 2.1 million low-income households, have children under 6 years of age who live in homes with lead exposure hazards. Even relatively low levels of lead exposure can impair a child's cognitive development. Children with blood lead levels can experience delayed growth and development, damage to the brain and nervous system, learning and behavior problems, and a host of other health-related problems. Public health actions are needed for these children. There is no safe blood lead level in children.

HUD also shares the fact that the most common source of exposure for children is lead-based paint, which was used in many homes built before 1978. Adults and children can absorb lead into their bodies by inhaling in lead dust (especially during activities such as renovations, repairs, or painting) or by swallowing lead dust that settles in food, food preparation surfaces, floors, windowsills, eating paint chips, soil that contains lead, or other places. Children can also become exposed to lead dust from adults' jobs or hobbies and from some metal toys or toys painted with lead-based paint.

“NLPPW is a call to action to bring together individuals, organizations, industry, and government agencies to increase lead poisoning prevention awareness in an effort to reduce childhood exposure to lead,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL supports the efforts of NLPPW with all types of environmental and industrial hygiene testing services for lead and other heavy metals. With laboratories located across the United States and Canada, we also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, and personal protective equipment.”

Last year, EMSL sponsored an educational video about National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/YfaJoRrOpI4.
