Retail sales unexpectedly jump in September as consumers keep spending

Retail sales rose more than expected in September as consumers continued to open their wallets and spend, even as they confronted an uptick in inflation.

Americans picked up their retail spending in September, even as they confronted an uptick in inflation.

Retail sales, a measure of how much consumers spent on a number of everyday goods, including cars, food and gasoline, rose 0.7% in September, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. That is above both the 0.3% increase projected by Refinitiv economists and the 0.6% gain recorded in August.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
